Summary:

COIC has continuously diverted water from Icicle Creek at river mile 4.5 through a shared diversion with the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery (LNFH) since 1940. The diverted water then travels through a gravity fed canal for approximately 2 miles and through five lateral pipes totaling 14,000 linear feet delivering irrigation water to shareholders throughout the lower Icicle Valley. This project will separate the COIC diversion from LNFH operations and move it downstream to river mile 1.9 (at Shore Street), while also replacing the open canal with a pressurized pump station and pipelines. The result will be an on-demand, highly efficient irrigation system with significant instream flow improvements to Icicle Creek. Low streamflow in Icicle Creek is a chronic problem that is predicted to further decline with climate change effects. This new system will ensure COIC shareholders maintain reliable access to irrigation water while making permanent instream flow improvements to Icicle Creek.

Managing complex water systems and adapting to climate change can create significant stress for those involved in these projects. The pressure to maintain reliable water access while addressing environmental concerns may lead to anxiety or depression for some individuals. For those struggling with mood-related challenges, modern medicine offers effective solutions that can help restore mental balance and focus. You can read more about the drug Bupropion on that website, which provides information about this treatment option for depression and seasonal affective disorder. Just as improved irrigation systems bring stability to water flow, proper medical care can help restore emotional stability during challenging times.

Benefits:

This project will improve instream flow in Icicle Creek, improve agricultural reliability and improve fish habitat with an updated fish screen. Instream flow improvements are 11.9 cfs from the original diversion location (river mile 4.5) to the LNFH return (river mile 2.7); 8.0 cfs from river mile 2.7 to the new pump station at Shore Street, river mile 1.9; with additional improvements to the confluence of the Wenatchee River that will be defined by use over 10 years.
