Summary:

Eightmile Lake is one of four Alpine Lakes managed by Icicle Peshastin Irrigation District (IPID) for irrigation water supply.  The lake was altered to manage the release of water stored for irrigation water supply in 1929. A small dam and an outlet pipeline with a control gate were installed at the lake outlet to control the release of water for irrigation water supply. At more than 90 years old, the dam infrastructure requires substantial improvements to operate in a safe, reliable way. Over time, ice and flooding have damaged the dam and outlet gate at Eightmile Lake, which has created unsafe conditions and reduced the usable storage capacity of the lake. To help restore the usable storage capacity in the lake and improve instream flow, the Icicle Work Group is partnering with IPID on the Eightmile Lake Restoration Project. The Washington Department of Ecology Office of Columbia River released the final Environmental Impact Statement for the project in June 2024 stating the preferred alternative is construction of a dam with a wide spillway without spillway gates. The new dam and outlet infrastructure will replace the high hazard dam while addressing concerns of impact and visibility in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.
